The coal production chain

The Jorge Lacerda Thermoelectric Complex (CTJL) is the tip of a production chain that moves R$6 billion a year in Santa Catarina’s economy, generating around 21,000 direct and indirect jobs and impacting on the lives of 100,000 people.

All these figures refer to mining activities (coalmines), transportation (Tereza Cristina railroad), the cement industry, the mining machinery and equipment industry, energy production (CTJL) and miscellaneous services. There are 15 municipalities in the south of Santa Catarina involved and directly benefiting from the energy production chain.

Unit Reviews

CTJL is responsible for 21% of the energy needed to supply the state of Santa Catarina. 

Aiming for excellence in the maintenance management of the Complex’s seven generating units, major stoppages in the operation of the machines are carried out every year, called “Unit Overhauls”.

The aim is to carry out maintenance activities at the plants, acting in a preventive manner, investing in equipment and systems, with a view to improving the efficiency of the units, improving environmental indicators, replacing obsolete systems, complying with insurance company requests and extending the useful life of some vital equipment for the plant.

In order to carry out the overhauls on time and to the required quality, in addition to Diamante’s staff, approximately 1,000 direct jobs are created through partner companies, which are hired for an average period of five months a year, boosting the region’s economy.

Research and Development (R&D) projects

CTJL invests between R$3.5 million and R$4 million a year in research and development projects, with the aim of promoting and enabling the full cycle of the research, development and innovation chain.

In this way, creating equipment and improving the provision of services that contribute to the security of the electricity supply, low tariffs, a reduction in the sector’s environmental impact and a reduction in the country’s technological dependence.
