Research & Development

The aim of the R&D Program is to allocate human and financial resources appropriately to projects that demonstrate the originality, applicability, relevance and economic viability of products and services in energy processes and end uses.

The aim is to promote a culture of innovation, stimulating research and development in the Brazilian electricity sector, through the development of new equipment and processes, as well as improving the provision of services that contribute to the security of electricity supply, low tariffs, a reduction in the sector’s environmental impact and the country’s technological dependence. The Research and Development (R&D) model adopted by Diamante Energia complies with Law 9.991/00 and the regulatory framework established by ANEEL – the National Electric Energy Agency (REN 754/2016 and REN 1074/2023). It seeks to develop studies and projects that are aligned with the Just Energy Transition and can contribute to the evolution of a low-carbon economy.

The use of zeolites has been growing year on year in the world market, and they can be applied in different sectors of the economy such as the manufacture of detergents, catalysts, effluent treatment, CO2 capture, and use as fertilizing agents and soil regulators. Due to its high silicon concentration and aluminum in its constitution, ash from the combustion of mineral coal is considered an important source for the synthesis of zeolites. Around 80 % of the zeolite market is destined for the detergent sector, but it is also known that this material has a high capacity for adsorbing CO2and can be used in processes that reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, recent studies have pointed to zeolite not only as a soil-regulating agent, but also as a product that can be applied in soil fertilization. Considering that Brazil is a major food producer, the application of zeolites in the agricultural sector could help reduce the country’s demand for imported fertilizers. Therefore, this project will bring several market opportunities to Brazil in different segments involving zeolites. In addition, the project is also an opportunity to develop new products in the coal region of Santa Catarina, contributing to the socio-economic development of the region.

Methodology for estimating residual life based on actual physical sampling of high-energy components in thermal power plants

ANEEL: PD-11592-0123/2023

The Jorge Lacerda thermal power plant has been in operation for more than 40 years, and as time goes by, the metallic components suffer a reduction in their metallurgical integrity. Knowing the residual operating time of these components is important for determining the investments needed to keep the unit running.

The main objective is to develop a methodology for taking samples, microstructural characterization, stress and strain analysis, in order to determine the lifespan of the metal components of a thermal power plant, using the Small Punch test. This approach aims to predict the useful life of important CTJL components.
