One of the topics at the 6th edition of ExpoMais, which took place from November 8 to 10 at ACIC in Criciúma, was the debate on Just Energy Transition (JET).

The president of Diamante, Pedro Litsek, took part on Wednesday (09) in a chat about this very important issue for the southern region of the state and for the country. He was joined by the SC government’s representative on the National Council for a Just Energy Transition, Anderson Miguel, and the president of the Environment and Sustainability Chamber of the Federation of Industries of the State of Santa Catarina (FIESC), José Magri.

All three were very emphatic about the importance of a fair transition for the coal production chain, which in the region alone generates 20,000 jobs and generates R$6 billion a year in the economy.

Pedro began the debate by explaining that the activities of the Jorge Lacerda Thermoelectric Complex as planned will end in 2040. “That’s why this just transition is so important over the next few years, where we’ll be investing in gas-fired power plants, for example, and also migrating the activities of our employees,” Litsek explained.

José Magri explained that FIESC has research and innovation centers at its disposal that can contribute greatly to the transition by combining knowledge and technology. “The TEJ needs to be thought out and gradual, and the sector starts in the coal mines, goes through the railroad, the Jorge Lacerda Thermoelectric Complex, all the way to the collection of waste by the cement companies, it’s a lot of people involved,” Magri explained.

Anderson Miguel spoke about the importance of the creation of the Just Energy Transition Program Council, which was set up in July this year. “The state is the driver of this whole process, of the connection between the productive sector and organized civil society. The council should monitor the implementation of the transition through actions, deadlines and sources of funds, ensuring its execution, the government representative added.

ExpoMais is one of the most important events in the region when it comes to knowledge and transformation, bringing lectures and chats on technology and innovation.
